What can I use to keep fresh cut flowers last longer in a vase?

I love fresh cut flowers and get frustrated when they die so quickly!

I do as the person said above and cut the stems at a 45d angle, but I haven't tried the hot water trick.

For me I put them in really cold water, change the water daily, avoid heat, and keep out of direct sunlight. In the cooler weather I can keep cut Gerberras alive for 2 weeks.

Hope this helps!

Cut the flowers at an angle before putting in the vase. I've found that a little bit of suger mixed with water works wonders.
Reply:When you get them home, take all leaves or foliage off

below the water line in the vase. Then re-cut them under

water with a very sharp sissors or blade at a long angle

to increase water absorption. Then finely crush a couple

of Bayer aspirin and add to the water. Change waters

about every three days, repeating the process. This

will increase the life of your flowers about 500%!
Reply:USE A SQIRT OF BLEACH/ A TBLS OF SUGAR/ OR AN ASPRIN SHOULD WORK HAV KEPT FLOWERS 2 WEEKS USING EITHER OF THESE . HOP[E IT HELPS .
Reply:When you get fresh cut flowers, cut the stems off at an angle and dip the bottom end of the stem quickly into hot water, then place them into the vase-water immediately. That drives out any air from the stem and allows the flowers to uptake water in the vase immediately.
Reply:I've found along with the other answers already posted, if you wrap a few paper towels or some toilet paper around the ends about 3 inches up the flowers tend to stay alive a little longer as well.
Reply:if u put an aspirin in to the water and clean the water every 2nd day they can last up to 3 weeks, and also remove any that do start to wilt as that can turn the water stagnant.
Reply:I worked as a floral designer for 15 years. The best way is to change the water to fresh everyday and giving the stems a cut on an angle, using a sharp knife. If the stem is pinched or squished at the bottom, water cannot get up the stem and it will die very quick. That's usually why rose heads flop over.

Bacteria builds up in water that is just sitting, and that also makes the flower die quicker. Let's face it...It's gonna die anyhow!

All those hints your hear about putting aspirin etc. in water are not true. Just wives tales....
Reply:Cut flower stems on an angle then put into water with a little bit of household bleach (about a capful).
Reply:To bring flowers back from the florist, have some wet cotton wool in plastic to go around the cut part of the stem and hold it in place with a elastic band. That doesn't let the end dry out and helps especially if it is a long drive before getting them into a vase.

The xylons in the stem can suck up more water if cut at an angle ... but any cut will also squeeze water already inside out of it ... so cut the stems while holding underwater in a bucket. Then watered continuously. Place in vase and keep in a cool place.

Change the vase water daily.

When the flowers start to show sgns they are dying, sugar or asprin can perk them up for a another day or so, but then they deteriorate quicker after that.
Reply:Add sugar to the water
