Does anyone know the name of the stuff you dip fresh flowers in and they keep forever?

You can use silica gel to preserve fresh flowers. It's bit more long winded than dip them in but does a good job. I wouldn't use glycerin for flowers only foliage.

Does anyone know the name of the stuff you dip fresh flowers in and they keep forever?
Sugar
Reply:Silica Gel or Borax (from Boots')
Reply:Silica gel, I believe. I think you can buy it at hobby stores %26amp; floral shops.
Reply:Hey

Well things dont exactly keep indefinately forever!

Anyway that aside there are a few things to do.

This is mainly for fresh flowers:

Try putting a few drops of washing up liquid (the stuff you use to wash yr dishes with) into the water in the vase with them.

Go into large garden retailers and ask them if they know what the actual name is-just describe fully what types of flowers they are or what you are wanting this magic stufff to do and they should be able to help. If nt try going to one of those small expensive boutique shops and see what they know!

If you are going to a wedding or such occasion and have bought flowers too early (say a day before) or are going on a long hot car journey put the bunch in the fridge the night before and they should last fr a few hours longer and stops them from drooping.

Also as soon as you take cuttings take the flowers and put em straight into fresh water make sure there are no air bubbles and avoid debris getting into the water. Ie change the water every day and take any leaves and petals out that could have fallen into it.

When buying fresh flowers look for tight buds and make sure the heads arent droopy.

Use sharp sissors or a knife to cut the stems to the desired length BUT do this under a running tap of COLD water and make sure the cuts are on a slant.

Place the flowers in a vase of warm water (room tempertaure) and arrange how you like.

Remove any foliage that will sit under the water line or dip into the water.

Place the vase in a cool spot away from direct sunlight. Cover any wilting heads with newspaper- it helps them to become plump again.

Add a preserve to keep the water free form fungus infestation (ask at garden centres).

If this doesnt work try a few drops of vodka into the water.

But if you actually want to PRESERVE them for ever dry em and press em or theres a brill new way!

I have sent and received ProFlowers (from ProFlowers.com) and in both instances I was very happy with the results. Great service and fresh, long-lasting flowers.

When do hydrangers flower?

I want to use fresh hydranger flowers to decorate my wedding cake but don't know if they will be in flower. i am wanting to get married in july time.

When do hydrangers flower?
Depends on the species. "Mophead" Hydrangeas flower on old wood, and usually in June. Many of the new Hydrangeas flower on new growth, and they flower in summer and early fall.

If you are buying from a florist - just call them ask ask if they will have some available on the date you need.
Reply:they should still be in flower by then, I've got some in the garden that are just starting to flower now
Reply:Bad news but hydrangeas are summer flowering but florists might have a few tricks up their sleeves if you have your heart set on them.good luck with the wedding

Whats better silk or fresh flowers?

fresh, you dont have have to dust them just water

Whats better silk or fresh flowers?
both fresh and silk flowers are very nice but there are some ups and downs for both:

fresh flowers: they shed leaves alot and you have to make sure you water them every day

but

they are very very pretty and they make a room look more bright

silk flowers: get very dusty and don't have the beautiful look that real flowers do

but

you don't have to water them and they don't shed leaves or pettles and still have some of the look of real flowers

hope i helped
Reply:If I could have either I would choose fresh.

But -- they are more expensive (here) and do finally wilt, if are cut flowers.

Actually, potted flowers are my favorite.

But I have two felines in house, and they'd eat flowers if given a chance.

Artificial flowers last longer and can be found out of season.

It's like saying, "What's better, live music or recorded?"
Reply:Fresh
Reply:FRESH...much prettier, not tacky and brings a nice floral scent into your home. Silk is much higher maintenance and you would get sick of looking a the same flowers day in, day out. At least with fresh its a new look all the time. Never boring.
Reply:Fresh flowers are nice, they require daily watering, and sun, but also give off oxygen, if they are placed inside, in a vase, they will die within a week, inside, they also attract bugs.

Silk flowers, however make a pleasent picture, but have no scent, and if you place then outside, they will not last as long. Inside, they will not attract bugs.

Inside the house use Silk Flowers. Out side use the real deal: Fresh Flowers.
Reply:There's nothing like the smell of Fresh Flowers.
Reply:Fresh is always best. There are times when one cant rush out to get a bouquet of fresh flowers or dont have a garden of their own. In this case artificial will do. Also, not everyone has a green thumb or live in an area where fresh is available.

Artificial flowers have come a long way in durability and looks. I also like to add a nice potted flower to my rooms. It really is a matter of preference.
Reply:Fresh for sure!

When was renuzit fresh cut home fragrance spray recalled because of picture on can?

The can had a man's penis on the can. I have one of the cans. It's next to the seam on the can and the 'home fragrance spray' words. The fragrance is fresh cut flowers

I believe it was recalled in 1i993 or 1994.

What can I use to keep fresh cut flowers last longer in a vase?

I love fresh cut flowers and get frustrated when they die so quickly!

I do as the person said above and cut the stems at a 45d angle, but I haven't tried the hot water trick.

For me I put them in really cold water, change the water daily, avoid heat, and keep out of direct sunlight. In the cooler weather I can keep cut Gerberras alive for 2 weeks.

Hope this helps!

What can I use to keep fresh cut flowers last longer in a vase?
Cut the flowers at an angle before putting in the vase. I've found that a little bit of suger mixed with water works wonders.
Reply:When you get them home, take all leaves or foliage off

below the water line in the vase. Then re-cut them under

water with a very sharp sissors or blade at a long angle

to increase water absorption. Then finely crush a couple

of Bayer aspirin and add to the water. Change waters

about every three days, repeating the process. This

will increase the life of your flowers about 500%!
Reply:USE A SQIRT OF BLEACH/ A TBLS OF SUGAR/ OR AN ASPRIN SHOULD WORK HAV KEPT FLOWERS 2 WEEKS USING EITHER OF THESE . HOP[E IT HELPS .
Reply:When you get fresh cut flowers, cut the stems off at an angle and dip the bottom end of the stem quickly into hot water, then place them into the vase-water immediately. That drives out any air from the stem and allows the flowers to uptake water in the vase immediately.
Reply:I've found along with the other answers already posted, if you wrap a few paper towels or some toilet paper around the ends about 3 inches up the flowers tend to stay alive a little longer as well.
Reply:if u put an aspirin in to the water and clean the water every 2nd day they can last up to 3 weeks, and also remove any that do start to wilt as that can turn the water stagnant.
Reply:I worked as a floral designer for 15 years. The best way is to change the water to fresh everyday and giving the stems a cut on an angle, using a sharp knife. If the stem is pinched or squished at the bottom, water cannot get up the stem and it will die very quick. That's usually why rose heads flop over.

Bacteria builds up in water that is just sitting, and that also makes the flower die quicker. Let's face it...It's gonna die anyhow!

All those hints your hear about putting aspirin etc. in water are not true. Just wives tales....
Reply:Cut flower stems on an angle then put into water with a little bit of household bleach (about a capful).
Reply:To bring flowers back from the florist, have some wet cotton wool in plastic to go around the cut part of the stem and hold it in place with a elastic band. That doesn't let the end dry out and helps especially if it is a long drive before getting them into a vase.

The xylons in the stem can suck up more water if cut at an angle ... but any cut will also squeeze water already inside out of it ... so cut the stems while holding underwater in a bucket. Then watered continuously. Place in vase and keep in a cool place.

Change the vase water daily.

When the flowers start to show sgns they are dying, sugar or asprin can perk them up for a another day or so, but then they deteriorate quicker after that.
Reply:Add sugar to the water

How can I keep fresh cut flowers lasting longer?

Add a crushed aspirin to the water.

How can I keep fresh cut flowers lasting longer?
I don't know why, but my mother used to always cut the stems at an angle, then burn the wound. She'd add a crushed aspirin to the water in the vase and put the roses in.
Reply:Before you put them in the water, re-cut the ends.

Tear off excess leaves on stems.

Change the water if it gets cloudy.
Reply:Each day, cut just about 1/4 inch at angle from the bottom of the stem, and immediately put them in fresh and cool, not allowing any petals to be in the water and, dont remove any thorns from roses...it tends to shorten its life.I don't do it myself but there is an old wives tale I heard that some put a little sprite or glycerin in the water.

I help sell roses for our church for fundraisers on Valentines Day and Mothers Day...A florist owner gave the insight on clipping the ends of the stem.
Reply:Fill the vase/container you intend to put the flowers in, with half or less than half full of water. Crush two panadols into that water and place the flowers in it. Someone told me this and i did try it out. It lasted about 5 days. Try it out.
Reply:You can mix Bleach And Like Sprite in with it's water.

just keep it away from where the bleach will stain!
Reply:Cut the stems on an angle, change the water and re-cut every 2 days. Do not remove any leaves thorns anything, You want all the plants energy used to stay alive and in bloom. Wounding the plant will re-direct the plants energy into the wounded area.
Reply:Put some white vinegar in the water
Reply:Lightly spraying fresh-cut flowers with an air freshener, keeps them up to 2 weeks longer than usual. The fragrance combination also adds to a pleasant atmosphere. Enjoy!
Reply:lemonade and water
Reply:I have heard you can put them in mountain dew pop instead of water and they will last longer.

Will crushed aspring/tylenol keep flowers fresh longer?

I think this is an old wives tale but I am curious if any one has had any success doing this, and if so which is better tylenol or aspirin?

Will crushed aspring/tylenol keep flowers fresh longer?
Aspirin is acidic, and it does make flowers last longer. You need to dissolve it in the water, so don't use coated aspirin!

The perfect additive for flowers is a combination of acid, an anti-bacterial agent and a food source such as sugar. The National Rose Society recomments using Listerine ( a small amount in water).

Tylenol doesn't have any ingredients that are beneficial to cut flowers.
Reply:Perhaps an old wives tale but how many of these tales exist because they actually work!!

If indeed asprin or tylenol work to keep cut flowers fresh longer, I suspect it is because they discourage bacteria from growing in the water, which causes the stems to deteriorate and thus preventing the flower from drawing up water.
Reply:Well according to ''Queen'' 'Martha Stewart',Plain ole non scented bleech works the best.Just a drop or too.She snips off @ 1'' of the stem,UNDER WATER,first then puts them in a vase, with a drop of bleech
Reply:I have never used tylenol, but I have used asprin and it did seem to help. I usually just change the water daily and add a new asprin each time. If you don't want to keep crushing asprin, us BC powder, it is the same thing.
Reply:Aspirin does help a little.

Sugar

The rumour:

Sweetening the water with sugar or lemonade gives the flowers a boost that keeps them going for days longer.

The truth:

Au contraire, sugar can reduce the lifespan of flowers (think what would happen if you sat in a Jacuzzi with an infinite supply of chocolates).

Flowers do need sugar to keep them sustained, but it’s simple sugars they prefer (on growing plants, the leaves produce this special sustaining elixir).

Raw sugar and sweet sodas are ultimately just a big drawcard for bacteria and fungi, which shouldn’t be encouraged because they block the stems and prevent the flowers from taking in sufficient water.

Vinegar

The rumour:

You can keep cut flowers fresher for longer by adding vinegar to the vase.

The truth:

Vinegar is mildly acidic, so it will help to lower the pH balance of the water slightly – a good thing, as it makes it easier for the stems to absorb water.

The acidity may also help to keep the stem-blocking fungi at bay. Unfortunately, vinegar has the nutritional value of a Turkey Twizzler, so it’s not going to provide the sustenance a flower needs to live for longer.

Aspirin

The rumour:

Dissolving an aspirin in the water helps keep flower heads from drooping.

The truth:

There’s probably not enough sugar in aspirin for it to be an effective pick-me-up, but the aspirin does slightly lower the pH balance of the water, helping water absorption and inhibiting the growth of bacteria.

Bleach

The rumour:

A capful of bleach a day keeps the germs away from your flowers

The truth:

Bleach is very acidic, so it will dramatically lower the pH balance of the water, encouraging absorption and preventing the growth of bacteria. The trouble is that it could also burn the flower stem – and there’s nothing in the white stuff for the flower to feed on.

Rusty Coin

The rumour:

Dropping a penny in a vase will increase the lifespan of flowers.

The truth:

Wishful thinking. Pennies used to have a high copper content, which would lower the acidity of the water, but nowadays they’re so thinly coated they’re about as much use to your flowers as they are to you.

Mixture

The rumour:

1 teaspoon of bleach, 1 teaspoon of vinegar and 2 teaspoons of sugar in a litre of room-temperature water is a favourite treat of fresh-cut flowers.

The truth:

Will the limitations and negative effect of each ingredient be balanced by the positive effect of another?

Well, yes, perhaps, but not enough to make this concoction a viable replacement for commercial flower food.

And you’d probably be better off leaving out the bleach.
Reply:I use them all the time and my flowers last longer than when I dont
Reply:I've heard that Asprin does. . .never heard about tylenol (anacitametaphen) There is also something in the stores now called " flower fresh" or something lie that. . in little packets.

also when you get the flowers home, cut them on an angle under cold water with sharp sissors or knife (be careful). Then put in only enough water to cover the ends of the stems and dont be afraid to change the water every day. . .Good Luck !

I would say you could check Costco, but your best bet is probably a farmer's market. Some grocery stores have really nice flowers too and are a lot less expensive than floral shops.
Reply:Google flower wholesalers in your area. Some even ship if the quantity is large enough.

Would Fresh Cut Flowers survive in a box to another state? If so, for how long?
1-800-flowers does it all the time. They put a water tip on each stem and then ship the whole bouquet in styrofoam. I've gotten flowers that way and they lasted a week or two, same as florist plants do.
Reply:A fresh cut plant can last up to two weeks as long as it is kept between 34-40 degrees. It will need fresh water before it is sent and clip the bottom 1/8" off the stem. If it is not kept at 34-40 degrees, it wont last longer than 2 1/2 days.
Reply:Why not use Interflora or similiar in US?
Reply:My brother shipped Mom roses from California and we live in Ohio. The stems were packed in wet clay and wrapped with plastic. He did send them UPS second day delivery.. I don't think they would last long during the warmer weather.
Reply:Fresh cut flowers in that condition will last only a day or two at most.

Wedding cake with fresh flowers?

I need some help regarding a 4 tier wedding cake using fondant with small bunches of blue hydrangea and white filler flowers to go along with it.

I will have to poke the stems into the cake, will the sap from the stem poison the cake? Or do i have to wrap the stem up with some foil or wrapper?

Wedding cake with fresh flowers?
Before you go out and hurt yourself or your guests you need to know that you should only be using flowers that are labeled "food grade" for cakes and salads.

Flower shop flowers have been treated with pesticides, growth hormones.......and therefore should not be used in food

Furthermore not all parts of all flowers are edible.

Go to a good produce store and see what they can get you from their specialty item suppliers.

Food grade flowers tend not to have the shelf life of their of their flowershop/ home center cousins so you may have to p/u the flowers and decorate w/ them the day of the wedding .

I know for a fact that fg nastursums(sp ?) are really fragile

Edit

As far as what wax use you're back to the requirement of using a food grade product but in this case it's easy because food grade paraffin for canning purposes [jams %26amp; jellies ] is a readily available product.

Honestly I haven't made a wedding cake since school when it was confirmed beyond all doubt that I do not have innate pastry chef talents. I understand it intellectually but the knowledge doesn't quite translate out to my fingers.

Good luck
Reply:Hi,

the cake sounds beautiful!

Hydrangeas are non-edible flowers. I don't think there's enough poison in one stem to make everyone sick but just in case, wipe any sap off and wash, dip in wax and wrap it in florist tape (the green sort) or aluminium foil.
Reply:you could dip the stems in wax.
Reply:You should wrap it up in wrapping that they use at flower shops for corsages and mens flowers to pin to their suits. They will leak into the cake, but are not poisonous. It will look bad though if they leak badly.
Reply:I advise against the floral tape as there will likely be some flavor issues ... go with 2x-wax-dipped stems and cover as much of the stem that will be in the cake plus a little extra ... I think flavor and appearance would be more of a concern that any health affect ... appearance b/c some people would consider a plant stem in their food to be a little uninticing - if you know what i mean ...
Reply:I had hydrangeas poked into my wedding cake this summer. Just to make sure nobody was going to die at my wedding, i called a local flower shop and made sure that they were safe. They said that they are poisonous if eaten in large quantities, but that putting them in a wedding cake would be more than safe.

And it was...

I would not recommend using the floral tape that florists use.... I have bitten it off the roll before, and it has a horribly bitter taste. You wouldn't want it to ruin your cake.

Hope this helped!

Calendar events accounted for only 15 percent of overall floral sales; Mother's Day accounted for 23 percent and Valentine's Day for 16 percent of these sales. Wholesale Flowers Fact Sheet

Here are some of the latest statistics regarding the fresh cut, wholesale flower industry:

Roses continue to be the single most popular fresh cut flower with consumers. Approximately 1.3 billion stems were purchased in 2005.

Nearly 180 million stems of roses are bought in the USA just for Valentine's Day gift giving.

For the 2004 twelve-month season, imported cut flowers and greens accounted for some 80% of the total U.S. supply.

Consumers purchased an estimated $19.5 billion of floral items (including artificial blooms, potted plants, outdoor bedding/garden plants and related items) in 2005.

Approximately half of that was spent on fresh cut flowers and greens.

The nation's 22,753 retail florists averaged $290,000 per shop annual sales in 2005.

There are some 23,000 supermarkets selling fresh cut flowers in the United States.

Most flowers are purchased during four key holiday months: February, April, May and December. Besides holiday sales, flowers are typically purchased for gifts and remembrances.

Women prefer flowers in softer pastel colors (pale pink and pale purple top the list), while men tend to choose flowers with bold primary colors, like red.

According to the nation's florists, secretaries are the number one recipient of floral gifts in offices. Bosses, they say, are the least likely to receive a gift of fresh cut flowers.

Most growers pre-cool boxed flowers prior to shipping to prevent heat build-up and premature decay.

How often to give fresh cut flowers Food??

Every other day when you change the water???

also, do you cut the stems every time too?

How often to give fresh cut flowers Food??
They should only require food about twice a week.Change the water every other day. When you put in the vase in the beginning, be sure no leaves are in the water, trim back. Also cut the stems on a slant. When replacing water may sure flowers are not out of the water for any length of time, keep in water to the side until vase is cleaned out and water is added.

Tepid water is best, cut once again before returning flowers to vase.Keep fresh flowers out of direct sunlight or drafts. They prefer a cool room.
Reply:I would say about 2 times a week that is all. They do not need a lot of food as the filter it out of the earth.
Reply:Cutting the stems is good so they can still take up what they need to.... a great thing to do if you dont have food is to fill the vase with 1/2 water and the other 1/2 a clear soda. The acidity in the soda will keep bacteria out and the sugar will keep your flowers alive longer.... cant use a colored soda because of all the additives for color... so use the soda and you wont have to worry when to feed them ^^
Reply:ive tried soda but have had better luck with 1/3 sprite and 2/3 water. higher sugar content i think is the difference
Reply:you don't need to feed them that often but you absolutely need to change the water and make sure none of the leaves are actually in the water proper - trim all bottom leaves that are touching the water...I'd say feeding 1-2 times a week is cool. Also cut flowers last longer is kept away from direct sunlight.

Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping water in fresh cut flowers for a bridal bouquet?

I am helping my sister with her bridal bouquet...she is planning on carrying a bouquet of cut flowers. Does anyone know a way of keeping water in the stem so the flowers do not dry out at wilt? I have heard of gluing the cut ends of the stems, but I don't know what type of glue to use....any tips??

Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping water in fresh cut flowers for a bridal bouquet?
Store them in water in the fridge until RIGHT before the ceremony (and put them back in water between pictures and ceremony as well as have a vase for them to sit in during the reception prior to the toss). Have a nice thirsty towel handy to drip them onto prior to use.

Just an FYI, cut flowers will usually stand going without water for an hour or two without problems...depends upon how delicate the flowers are though (roses last better than peonies for example).
Reply:The only thing I have ever heard is to not cut them with scissors because that seals the stems, if you want them to drink lots of water cut them with a sharp knife on an angle.

Honestly, florists are usually so nice, I would go into your local florist and ask them for tips and advice, best to get the answer straight from the horses mouth.

Good luck!
Reply:My mom was a florist for many years and i've never heard of glueing the stems. My suggestion is just to keep it in water and acool place as long as possible. The florist making it will stick in a bucket of water and put it in the cooler overnight until you pick it up. AS soon as you get to the reception site make sure you have some sort of container to use as a vase. Something you can put water in and put the boquet in it. Other than that there are no tricks that I know of.

What can i use in the water to keep my fresh picked flowers to last longer?

i have heard of asprin but iv'e never tried it?

What can i use in the water to keep my fresh picked flowers to last longer?
sprite or 7-up added to the water
Reply:I use and always have used a small amount of bleach it kills the bacteria that grows in the water and the flowers last longer. when I say small I mean 1-2 teaspoons
Reply:put a penny in the vase with the flowers and water
Reply:Yes asprin does help keep the flowers

looking good longer.
Reply:Homemade conditioning and nutrients work well

A homemade solution may be made from 3 parts warm water and 1 part lemon-lime soda. Do not use diet drinks or cola. Add 1/4 tsp. bleach per quart of water. Two tablespoons of Real Lemon lemon juice will also balance alkalinity. Use 2 Tbs. of bottled 'Real Lemon' lemon juice, 1 Tablespoon sugar and 1/4 tsp. of bleach to a quart of warm water. The bleach prevents any growth of bacteria. Add 1/4 tsp. of bleach every 4 days, or change the water and solution completely
Reply:People use all different things. It really depends on what kind of flower. I grow roses and I use sugar to keep them longer after they are cut.
Reply:Sprite or generic lemon/lime soda drink. Aspirin works and also bleach (just a little bit), but Sprite does it all. Be sure to change your water every two to three days and add new Sprite etc. If it's a large vase of flowers use all of can of Sprite and finish filling vase with water, otherwise, adjust according to size of vase. Try to use water other than tap water cause it has all sorts of chemicals in it.

I would like to know how to keep cut flowers fresh, I get the little packages when I buy cut flowers but I?

can't buy it seperately, any help would be appreciated

I would like to know how to keep cut flowers fresh, I get the little packages when I buy cut flowers but I?
A couple drops of clorox in the water, and recut the stems every couple days. Keep the water changed probably every day so it doesnt get slimy and stinky.
Reply:When you get your cut flowers home, fill the sink with tempid water and place the flowers in it for 10-15 minutes. Then trim 1-1 1/2 inch from the stem at an angel, but make sure you cut the stem under water. Cutting at an angel creates a larger surface for the flowers to draw water from, and cutting under water ensures that there is not air pocket in the stem. Fill a vase with tempid water and arrange the flowers. Change the water in the vase every couple of days. It is also a good idea cut another 1/4 inch from the stems when you change the water. You can also add half a can of Sprite to the water, or a cap full of Clorox bleach, or half and Aspirin. I know it is a lot of work, but you can keep you flowers lasting for weeks.
Reply:the best thing i use is fizzy pop or fizzy water
Reply:I use a little bit of sprite and drop an ibprofen in the water too. that what the lady told me when i bought my last flowers. change the water about every other day and use fresh water not tap.
Reply:My mother in law swears that some Sprite in the water keeps roses looking new for a week
Reply:Dissolve an aspirin in the water. Of course this works better in warm water. Or, you could just use a BC powder. It works wonderfully. Make sure that what you use is actually aspirin.

Be sure to keep your stems trimmed. Always cut them at an angle.

Good luck.
Reply:cut off about an inch or more, put them in WARM water..change the water everyday.
Reply:quickly and gently burn the fresh cut tips on a hot pan...
Reply:Buy food for plants in any Walmart. It usually comes in a bottle.
Reply:Change the water daily, cut stems at an angle in the bottom and remove the leaves that are in the water portion to keep the water from contamination. Hope that helps, good luck.
Reply:The little packets you get is basically just sugar. To make them last longer, just add a little sugar to the water. Crush up two Asprin (not ibuprofen) and add it to the water. Works great too. Remember to snip the ends a little bit every day to every other day. The flowers seal themselves at the end preventing any of it to get in. I've never tried it, but I've heard cheap vodka works great too. Good Luck.

What substance added to water will keep cut flowers fresh?

i use dishwashing liquid..I was given roses two weeks ago and today they still look fresh using this method

What substance added to water will keep cut flowers fresh?
Aspirin.
Reply:Try bleach and I think every fourth days u trims the bottom bit slant not straigth cause if its straight the stalk will stand in the vase and blocks the water.
Reply:If is for roses or any flower that grows in cold, the best is ICE a lot of it. Fill the jar with half water and half Ice, my roses keep fresh for long periods. And if they grow in warmth weather, try water with aspirin. GOOD LUCK.
Reply:sugar
Reply:Sugar and a bit of bleach. The sugar provides food for the flowers, the bleach keeps bacteria from clogging the stems.
Reply:if you want to keep cut flowers fresh , and to last longer trim their stems before putting them in the water . they will also last longer if you maintain the water levelin the vase the way to do this is by adding ice cubes to the vase every morning and night , .good luck
Reply:i always put lemonade in my flowers they last for weeks,or even soda water
Reply:my aunt used to put a bit of sugar in it
Reply:Do not need any substance. Just cut out 1 cm of the stem that is exposed to water every alternate day. Was told but never tried, adding half tablet of paracetamol (panadol) may help..
Reply:a few drops of bleach- keeps bacteria and mold from forming.

Reply:I add sweet into their water, but I'm not sure if this really works or not..Someone had told this to me....
Reply:Change the water everyday...snip the ends just a bit to 're-new' the flowers...and add some sugar or a fizzy clear drink (eg.7-Up) to the water to keep them longer...
Reply:1 aspirin in the water. Use that old school aspirin not this Excedrin or Advil stuff.
Reply:Use fresh, warm water. Cut stems at an angle. Drop an aspirin in the water. Keep cool.
Reply:Put them in clear jello.
Reply:Put them in 7 up. I heard this while watcing the rose parade.

What is the best fresh flowers order on line for mother's day?

Carnations are very pretty, come in practically any color you can think of, and last a long time. They also smell nice!

I would like to enquire about the flower supplier where they do deliver the fresh flower daily?

If you're talking about flowers that could be obtained locally, most florist got theirs from Genting and deliver the freshly cut flowers to florists in malaysia that ordered them. If you are talking about flowers that has to be imported, florists would have a network with their counterparts who would then deliver them by plane.

How to keep flowers fresh in a box?

i was wondering if we were to keep flowers in a gift box...and unable to know how long it will be kept enclosed....so i was wondering are there any possible way to maintain the freshness of the flowers...thks for the help..

How to keep flowers fresh in a box?
http://www.plantea.com/cutflowers.htm
Reply:You have a couple of options. If the box can be kept in the fridge, the flowers will last longer (That is where florists keep flowers). You can also purchase little water vials that attach to the stem of the flower, fill the vial with water and floral preservative, out of heat and direct sunlight and upright (so the vials are at the bottom) and that will also make the flowers last longer. You can also saturate floral foam, insert the flowers in the foam, place the foam in a plastic container and then in the box to keep them fresh longer.

Contact the head office, try and arrange a meeting with their purchasing department or at least phone them, obtain a contact name and number and discuss on the phone.

What is the best way to keep cut flowers fresh?

I am a Floral Designer..... Replacing the water every 2-3 days and triming a little of the stems is the best way. Your florist should have given you a flower packet of floral food to add to the water. If you did not receive one, go back and get one. This has special food made for flowers.

What is the best way to keep cut flowers fresh?
I seem to remember that adding a quarter of an asprin to the water does the trick! Goodness knows what deep recess that came from but it sounds reasonable
Reply:This may sound weird but I guarantee that it works!

First, put a drop or two of ordinary househould bleach in the water in the vase, then make sure there are no leaves below the surface of the water. I have kept flowers fresh for two weeks by doing this.
Reply:Every other day change the water and trim 1/4" at a sharp angle. Only fill water to about 3" from the bottom as that will help preserve freshness. Add a 1/4 tsp of sugar or 1/2 an asprin (only asprin, not tylenol)
Reply:Trya few drops of peroxide. It givesoff oxygen. I use it in my houseplants.
Reply:sprite mixed into the water and cut the stems at a 45 degree angle at base.
Reply:water in a vase.

cut them under warm running water, at an angle with very sharp scissors. Mixed a crushed aspirin in the water, and add one every couple of days, it will do wonderfully
Reply:asprin, always keep flowers in cold water, adding a couple of ice cubes a day helps, releases O2 into water.
Reply:dissolve plain aspirin in the water - one tablet only.
Reply:sugar and water. Also alkasalser

How can I keep fresh cut flowers alive longer?

I've heard to drop an aspirin in the water, but is there anything else? And, does the aspirin work?

How can I keep fresh cut flowers alive longer?
Before you arrange your flowers make sure you remove any foliage that will be below the water level in the vase as this will rot and reduce the life of your flowers.

Changing the water daily is important and I have heard that both the above answers can work. I usually put a spoonful of sugar in the bottom and that works well also. You can buy special "cut flowers powder" from florists and garden centres that is specially made to put in the vase with your flowers, so that's good too.
Reply:use 7 up soda (has to be 7 up for some reason) with a little bit of water. That's what they use in the tournament of roses too. Also you can put a penny in the water.
Reply:Cut the stems at an angle so the flowers will get more water longer. Change the water daily and add Sprite to it. Re-cut the stems each time you change the water.

The aspirin does work.
Reply:If we buy Fresh Flowers there are a;ways a small packet attached to them which you put in the water, but if they are picked from the garden I always put a small teaspoonful of sugar in and that does work. I have heard about Aspirin but I have never used it.

I can get good deals on fresh cut flowers, what is the best way to sell them?

since they are already cut what is the best way to sell them? suppose you could but them in vases or something..how else? i can get roses, dafidils, daisys, etc.

we live out on a farm near a busy highway. keep that in mind for sales purposes.

I can get good deals on fresh cut flowers, what is the best way to sell them?
Try to get a restaurant or hotel to buy multiple sales on a daily or weekly basis. Find other people that make vases or wooden displays and work a deal. Get with wedding planners, funeral homes, local florist, craft shops.

Maybe you could sell them by the pound for those that want to self pick their own bouquet's?

Good luck.

How do I transport fresh flowers and the wedding cake?

We are driving approx 450 miles in the desert, staying in a hotel, and then another 250 miles to location. So the flowers will be sitting for about 36 hours. We are driving out of the US and it is hard to find a florist in that area so that is out of the question.

How do I transport fresh flowers and the wedding cake?
Fresh flower arrangements will not fare well in a 36 hour ordeal like this and have a high probability of being severely damaged. Wasted money, wasted flowers. It would be wise to have them shipped under refridgeration to either your hotel, wedding site, or post office. This situation would definitely warrant silk flowers in lieu of fresh if you were to drive them that far.

As for the wedding cake, don't even attempt to transport it. Find a local bakery or private cake decorator in the area of the wedding site to make it for you. I do not see it arriving in one piece, nor holding together if you drive it there.
Reply:it might be a little late, but I think you should have got flowers and the cake the last spot you could get from. Just an idea. I'm sure they will be okay if you keep them cold. But 36 hours is a while. I hope the flowers don't mess up. Good luck!
Reply:I did this. I went 7 hours. I put them all in styrofoam coolers. The hard ones. It was fine, just don't over pack them and put the ice in the bottom not on top. Check the ice every few hours. Good Luck. NO silk flowers, yuck!

How do you care for fresh cut flowers?

I got roses yesterday and i was wondering what is the best way to care for them so they last a bit longer?

How do you care for fresh cut flowers?
When it comes to cut flowers there's a lot of good advice and a lot of wives' tales floating around. I am a Plant Pathologist and have been the quality control manager of a flower importing company for over 13 years. This is what you need to do and why:

1- Buy flowers at a reputable source, don't buy them in a street corner or they will likely be old, stressed flowers.

2- Process them as soon as you bring them home, don't leave them in the car or sitting on the counter for hours.

3- Remove any brown or bruised petals; if there are any brown mushy spots it is most likely Botrytis, which is a fungus that will rot the flower. However if it is removed when the spot is still small your flowers will be ok.

4- Use a very clean vase that has been washed thoroughly; if it is not clean enough for you to drink from it then neither should your flowers. The number one reason why roses get "bent necks" is actually from getting the stems plugged by bacteria (more than air)

5- You can use cold water or luck warm water but NEVER hot water, this will only stress the flowers and reduce their vase life.

6- Use commercial flower food in the water if available and make sure you follow the instructions as to the amount of water to be used. Most of the little bags that come with bouquets are either for ONE PINT or if they are larger, for one Quart of water. You have to use all the flower food that comes in the packet. If you use less food or too much water, you will not have enough bactericide in the water and bacteria will develop reducing the vase life.

7- Remove any leaves that will be covered by water as these rot and contaminate the water. Do not remove more than it is needed, roses especially need their leaves to be able to draw water from the stem ends. The leaves act as a water pump; as water is evaporated from the leaves, water is pulled up through the stem.

8- Cut 1-2 inches from the stem ends (no less than one inch) this will remove the blockage of bacteria, air and plant cells plugging the stems. It has been advised for many years to cut them under water. This is true, the stems form a vacuum inside, and when cut they suck air. The air will plug them for a while and can prevent water absorption, but it has been shown that the air bubble dissolves in a few hours if stems are placed in water right away. I would still recommend cutting them under water (just fill the sink) as long as the water is perfectly clean. The most important thing is to cut them with a very sharp knife or sharp sheers that will not crush or damage the stems and put them in the vase with water or solution right away.

9- Do not pierce the stem higher up as it was suggested, the vessels inside the stem are only one or two inches long, the air bubble remains on the bottom of the stem. Florists use this green wire to forcibly keep the heads from bending, but as long as you follow the previous advice this should not happen.

10- Put your flowers in a fresh area away from direct sunlight or heat from appliances (like from the TV) and away from air drafts (like in front of the AC vent).

11- If you re-cut the stems use fresh flower food solution to refill the vase.

If you do not have flower food you can make your own. It does not work as well as commercial ones, but it works better than plain water. Flower food is made of the following:

a- SUGAR: to feed the flowers (once cut from the plant they cannot produce their own food anymore.

b- BACTERICIDE: to kill bacteria in the water. If you add sugar without adding a bactericide you will have bacterial soup.

c- ACIDIFIER: water flows better up the stem at a low ph, flower food contains citric acid or other substances to make the water acidic. Bacteria do not reproduce as much in an acidic environment either.

d- SURFACTANT: something that reduces the water tension of the water so that it flows better (a kind of soap).

So to make your own, you can use one part of a lemon-flavored soda like Sprite, 7-UP, Sierra Mist etc (it has to be regular, it cannot be diet) and two parts water. This will provide the sugar and acidity your flowers need. However you need to kill the bacteria or it will be worse than using water alone. You need to add 3-5 DROPS (not a squirt) of Clorox to the water depending on the size of your vase. Mix it up before putting the flowers in it.

Make a fresh solution when you re-fill the vase.

As far as the aspirin goes, it helps a little because it acidifies the water, but you are still missing the key ingredients; sugar and a bactericide.

It looks complicated but it is not, just use clean...- everything!

Enjoy!!
Reply:Change their water daily, use room temp water, recut the ends each time you change the water, but don't leave the stems exposed to the air any longer than necessary. Better yet, cut the stems under water, hold for a moment and then move to water filled vase.

Is that a bother? I know, I was a florist and daily cutting is a bother, so I keep the flowers out of sunlight and change the water when I remember.....like every few days. (LOL!) My roses from Saturday still look great today and the water hasn't been changed, yet.......I'm going to do it now.
Reply:put them in cold water cut the stem at a Angle add a aspirin to water keep out of light
Reply:cut off half an inch of the stem at the bottom at an angle, change the water and add plant food daily.

Ever heard of putting sugar in water to keep flowers fresh?

I have also heard an aspirin. Anyone know about this?

Ever heard of putting sugar in water to keep flowers fresh?
I have never heard of putting sugar in water to keep flowers fresh, but I have heard about aspirin....it is not true, the aspirin does help keep the water clear but not help the flowers last longer, the secret to keeping your flowers fresher longer is to keep the water changed as well as the stems trimmed at an angle, being carful not to crush the stem, keep all the leaves below the water level cut off as they will rot.
Reply:Yes I have heard of both. Both seem to work.
Reply:Yes, I have heard that both work, as well as lemon lime carbonated beverages. You can also add a very tiny amount of bleach to keep bacteria in the water to a minimum.

Most importantly, cut the stems with a sharp knife at an angle and plunge them immediately into water, not overly hot or cold. I usually fill the kitchen sink with water and cut the stems under the water and then transfer very quickly into vase of water next to sink. Change the water daily and recut the stems just a tiny bit to increase the ability to absorb the water.

How do i keep cut flowers fresh besides adding flower food in the vase?

Put a sprinkle of salt into the water every time you change it (at least every other day). The salt fights bacteria that makes flowers fade fast.

How do i keep cut flowers fresh besides adding flower food in the vase?
Re-cut the stems under water after you bring home your cut flowers. Re-cut the stems daily. A small amount of chlorine bleach in the water will kill bacteria that accelerate wilting and decay.

Where can I can fresh cut flowers for discount prices?

Flowers that are not in an arrangement are what I am looking for.

Serious answers only please.

Where can I can fresh cut flowers for discount prices?
WalMart or a grocery store
Reply:If you have a Farmer's Market in your town that would be a good place to get discount price flowers. Some towns, like Houston TX have a "florist" row downtown where you can get amazing flowers at cheap prices.
Reply:Most flower shops will sell some types of flowers before they wilt. It depends on what you are going to do with them. You can always set up to buy the flowers from the wholesalers yourself if you buy them in bulk. All it takes is a resale license and a tax number.
Reply:At a flower and plant nursery. But, likely they will require you to buy in bulk to get any discount.

I need info for Southern California Flower Warehouses OC, IE, LA, MoVal, PS?

I'm planning a shower and we need lots of fresh flowers. I know there is a flower Warehouse somewhere around the OC, but not sure where. Where I could buy a huge amount of flowers for like $10 a bunch.

I like in the Inland Empire Riverside San Bernardino, so anything close to me would be ideal.

Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I need info for Southern California Flower Warehouses OC, IE, LA, MoVal, PS?
Well, I'm in OC %26amp; I go to one in Costa Mesa %26amp; one in Fountain Valley, but they're fairly small. I know it's a bit far but you'd be MUCH better off going to the flower district in Downtown LA. It is huge %26amp; the flowers are cheap %26amp; fresh. Tons of people go there when planning events. Here's a link:

http://www.laflowerdistrict.com/

Also, you may just want to check around your area %26amp; ask people if they know of any farmer's markets near you. The flowers are always beautiful there.

BTW, I'm getting married %26amp; the girls in the weddings section are really helpful when planning an event so if you come up with another question, try posting it there. It's under Family %26amp; Relationships - Weddings.

Has anyone heard of putting fresh flowers in very hot water in order for them to open fully and last longer?

I was at a very fine restaurant friday nite and I saw the most beautiful white fully opened roses I'd ever seen! The receptionist told us they were called "faith" and that they use a special technique to open them fully and make them live longer. She said they put them in very hot water and it opens them immidiately? I just don't believe that! Besides, I looked for that special white rose using that name on the internet and didn't find anything close to a rose by that name. I don't think she knew what she was talking about. Any feedback, guys?

Has anyone heard of putting fresh flowers in very hot water in order for them to open fully and last longer?
If roses have wilted because they have been out of water too long or because the stems were not cut underwater soon enough and the stem ends have become clogged, hot water will revive them faster than cold water. The reason is that stems absorb hot water more quickly. Keep in mind that water moves up the stem more rapidly when cut flowers are placed in slightly acidic water.

Quite often, you'll see cut roses drooping at their necks (right below the buds). A simple way to revive them is to cut about an inch off the bottom of the stems and place them immediately in very hot water. You should start to see the roses revive after 30 minutes or so.

(Flowers that are soft-stemmed wouldn't be able to withstand the hot water and they would probably be damaged)

A COUPLE OF HELPFUL HINTS TO PROLONG CUT FLOWERS:

Water for cut flowers is best if it is slightly acidic because acid breaks up air bubbles in water by neutralizing the carbon dioxide gas. Air bubbles can clog stems and prevent water from reaching the flowers and foliage.

IF you aren't able to use the florist preservatives, you can mix up your own by;

A) Mixing any clear citrus-based soft drink (such as 7-Up or Sprite but NOT DIET) with three parts water + 1/2 teaspoon of bleach (to prevent the formation of algae which can plug up stems and keeps them from absorbing water)

OR

B) Mix 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 1 tablespoon sugar, and l/2 teaspoon household bleach in 1 quart of water.

You should change the water in the vase every day and try to cut off the bottom of the stem (at a 45-degree angle) underwater each time.

Hope this answered your question! GOOD LUCK with your cut roses and enjoy!

Reply:Yes I have! Although I was told warm water, but maybe hot water makes them open even quicker. Just this past weekend, we held our annual Colonial Tea at our church, (our 101st!!), and we set up beautiful tables with our finest dishes and tableclothes. One woman bought some beautiful purple flowers for her centerpiece still in the budding stage the night before the tea. By the next afternoon, many were in full bloom and just gorgeous. So it does work!!
Reply:I don't know about that but I do know what keeps them longer i use this method when ever i get flower's take the vase put cold water in it and get some gingerale and pour at least half a bottle in it and the flower's last those few extra days longer and keeps them healthy and looking good you should try it it's no lie!!!
Reply:I have always been told and read that you are supposed to re-cut the flowers about 1 inch from where they were originally cut put them in luke warm water with either the fresh cut flower food that comes with them or a mixture of warm water 1 teaspoon sugar and 1 teaspoon chlorine bleach also changing the water every couple of days is supposed to help them last longer too. i think that putting them in hot water would just do more harm to them than good.
Reply:I don't know whether the hot water helps, but I do know you can put cut flowers in lemonade or mineral water to make them last longer. Water with a dissolved asprin also works.

~*Flowers Fresh or Fake: Which one is best for the flower girl to throw*~?

God brought you %26amp; your honey together, so why not use what he made!

~*Flowers Fresh or Fake: Which one is best for the flower girl to throw*~?
I am using fake petals, for the flower girl just because she is so young (2). Also because I am using them to decorate around my cake and my head table. But fresh flowers are always nice to.
Reply:The flower girl should toss fake flowers or dry flowers because you don't want to stain your gown just walking down the aisle.

For my wedding, I am giving my flower girl dry flowers from the bouquet of flowers that my fiance has given me in the past.
Reply:Most churches won't allow flower girls to throw flowers anymore, because of the stains that they create when people walk on them. A great new trend with flower girls now is a ball of flowers attached to a thick ribbon which the flower girl just carries down the aisle. It is a great way to still have a flower girl, and not get those red rose stains on teh bottom of your white dress!!
Reply:Fake.

If you step on a real flower petal, which are on the floor now, then you could crush the pulp and color into the floor. This can even leak through aisle runners, and then you'll be charged a hefty cleaning fee.
Reply:Real ones that's my opinion
Reply:If the ceremony is indoors you better check if its okay to have fresh flowers. Most places don't allow it because they stain the Carpet's or floors. If its out doors I'd definitely do fresh for sure.
Reply:Definitly fresh. I think the fake ones look ugly and cheap
Reply:I think fake flower petals are better for them to throw... cause then you can use them to decorate with after you get your own place set up.... i put our wedding pic in the middle of a shelf and then put the flower petals all around it....it looks great... but you can use your own ideas.... i just think fake is better... but it depends on what you want. and Congrats on the upcoming wedding
Reply:Either is perfectly fine! We used fresh but it's just as easy to buy fake ones, and those you can keep and decorate your photo album with. :)
Reply:For my wedding i used both real and fake
Reply:fake flowers. I have a catalog of flowers on my website. check it out below. I have a catalog that I can email to you also if you want.
Reply:a friend of mine recently got married this summer..the one thing she said she wishes she could do different was flowers. She had all real flowers..which was pricey. She said she wishes only her bridesmaid had real flowers and everyone else had fakes.
Reply:Seeing as the flower girl usually throws flower petals, real would make more sense.
Reply:Depends. Using real white or softly coloured (pale pink, pale purple) petals is wonderful, because they real petals fall more prettily than fake ones, and won't leave stains in the carpet when they're stepped on.

Fake if you want something with a darker colour, but they won't have the natural effect of real petals.
Reply:Having been a flower girl, I would say fake is perfectly fine. The great thing about fake flowers is she can keep the arrangement for years to come as a happy memory of that day. I still have the little basket of flowers I carried from my aunt's wedding - 22 years ago plus.

Does the florist, or the cake baker decorate the wedding cake with fresh flowers ?

How far in advance should you decorate the cake with fresh flowers ?

Does the florist, or the cake baker decorate the wedding cake with fresh flowers ?
never put the flowers on until you are at the event that the cake is for. you can put them on, just not overnight or anything!

the baker or the florist will put the flowers on. it depends on the design of the cake. the florist brings the flowers usually, so they match with the rest of the decorations. this is something that has to be worked out with both the florist and the baker.
Reply:im sure that they use real flowers. thats what i heard
Reply:The florist can put the fresh flowers on your cake when the cake arrives at the site. Normally, that would be about 6-4 hours before you cut it. Having a florist choose and arrange your flowers on the cake means that they will coordinate with the other flowers in the wedding. It's a cheap way to decorate the cake too, much cheaper %26amp; prettier than sugar flowers.
Reply:its up to the bride
Reply:The baker puts the flowers on the cake, and real or fake flowers can be used.
Reply:My florist put the flowers together for the cake and brought them to the reception hall. The baker then brought the cake and placed the flowers on the cake just before the reception. You should not put the flowers on more than a few hours before the wedding because they will wilt.
Reply:no, I believe the flowers are either sugar made or plastic, but there is only oneway to find out. By taking a big bite.
Reply:i think it would be the baker.

How do you keep flowers fresh?
...the IDIOT who suggested "bleach" is trying to KILL your flowers... chlorine kills everything ! ...fresh water, a tea-spoon of sugar... but remember..."they" are cut flowers... "they" won't last long.
Reply:You can put them in a plastic bag in the freezer. Every couple of weeks, take them out and put some new water in the bag. BUT MAKE SURE THAT THE WATER IS ALMOST TOTALLY GONE BEFORE YOU FREEZE IT AGAIN! Now, the freezer is much harder to care for, so you can do the same thing but with the fridge! But also beware of the freezer: it works some times, but once, my flowers became flowersicles. So I would go with the fridge at night, and in the day time, but them at an angle to let more water seep in! It will last years if you use that idea. Believe me, I have some flower girl flowers from when I was 4!
Reply:Make sure you change their water every other day. when you do so, snip a little off the bottom of their stalks at an angle. make sure the water is luke warm, and if you have any, put some flower food in there. they will stay nice for a week or two.
Reply:You can soak the BOUQUET in water and add a few asprin (yes, it works!) or you can stop by a flower shop and ask them for the powder (flower food) to keep them looking fresh. :)
Reply:it sounds gay that I know this... but if you cut the ends of them at a 45 degree angle it gives the ends more surface area and easier for the flowers to suck water up!... also they sell flower food at any nursery!
Reply:Put them in the fridge at night. That will lengthen their life by at least a few days. The bleach in the water is a good idea too.
Reply:I've always dropped an aspirin in the water and sprayed the flowers and greenery with hairspray. My flowers last at least 2 weeks this way.
Reply:Change the water everyday and add nutrient. Be sure the water level stays high.
Reply:you can get flower food for them in your local flower shop, they wont last much longer though :(
Reply:a tablespoon or so of bleach in the water helps for a week or two and keep them away from heat/direct sunlight...the cooler they are the longer they last
Reply:drop a aspirin in the water.
Reply:Water them.
Reply:got o a florist and get soethig to put in the water

corn syrup, jsut a little will help

trim the stems a bit too
Reply:Don't pick them! (bouquet--the whole word is French, not just the first syllable!)
Reply:put them in the refridgerator
Reply:keep them in the fridge..it works...but obviously you won't be able to look at them :p just hang em upside down to dry
Reply:water with a little bleach
Reply:first of all you need roses and you put them i water
Reply:not sure but you could get them dryed flowersforever.co.uk
