You can use silica gel to preserve fresh flowers. It's bit more long winded than dip them in but does a good job. I wouldn't use glycerin for flowers only foliage.
Does anyone know the name of the stuff you dip fresh flowers in and they keep forever?
Sugar
Reply:Silica Gel or Borax (from Boots')
Reply:Silica gel, I believe. I think you can buy it at hobby stores %26amp; floral shops.
Reply:Hey
Well things dont exactly keep indefinately forever!
Anyway that aside there are a few things to do.
This is mainly for fresh flowers:
Try putting a few drops of washing up liquid (the stuff you use to wash yr dishes with) into the water in the vase with them.
Go into large garden retailers and ask them if they know what the actual name is-just describe fully what types of flowers they are or what you are wanting this magic stufff to do and they should be able to help. If nt try going to one of those small expensive boutique shops and see what they know!
If you are going to a wedding or such occasion and have bought flowers too early (say a day before) or are going on a long hot car journey put the bunch in the fridge the night before and they should last fr a few hours longer and stops them from drooping.
Also as soon as you take cuttings take the flowers and put em straight into fresh water make sure there are no air bubbles and avoid debris getting into the water. Ie change the water every day and take any leaves and petals out that could have fallen into it.
When buying fresh flowers look for tight buds and make sure the heads arent droopy.
Use sharp sissors or a knife to cut the stems to the desired length BUT do this under a running tap of COLD water and make sure the cuts are on a slant.
Place the flowers in a vase of warm water (room tempertaure) and arrange how you like.
Remove any foliage that will sit under the water line or dip into the water.
Place the vase in a cool spot away from direct sunlight. Cover any wilting heads with newspaper- it helps them to become plump again.
Add a preserve to keep the water free form fungus infestation (ask at garden centres).
If this doesnt work try a few drops of vodka into the water.
But if you actually want to PRESERVE them for ever dry em and press em or theres a brill new way!
