Aspirin for fresh cut flowers?

I was told that if I put an aspirin in a vase of fresh cut flowers, it will preserve them longer. Is this true and if so, what does the aspirin do to the flowers? How often should I change the water in the vase because I do not know how to preserve roses but I want to save these!! If anyone knows what I'm talking about, please let me know!

drop one or two non-coated aspirin in the water first. Cut the stems at a slant, and then place the flowers in the water. Don't know how it works, but it will sometimes keep them fresh looking for up to 2 weeks. If the water starts turning a green color, empty and start over.
Reply:yep and change the water every few days
Reply:Mom always put half a crushed aspirin in the flower vase and it seemed to work. How, I do not know.
